Tonight the Rangers head to Newark for the first time since this….
We all know the story, the Blueshirts can’t score, the power play is terrible, then they lose to a Devils team they should have beaten.
If you didn’t know the story NJD fans will be sure to tell you. And really, is there a more annoying fan base in hockey? The Devils, owners of three Cups are consistently in the playoffs, yet these wonderful fans still can’t fill the building? Jeezus, the Rangers sold out every game of the Theo Fleury/Kevin Stevens (crack is whack, yo!) era. Thanks to the best GM in hockey, the Devils are always solid. Yet, where are their fans? Its a disgrace that there are so many empty seats at nearly every home game except of course, when they host the NYR or Flyers. This is a good team year in and year out and where are the fans? Are they out buying Devil jerseys with their first names on the back? Are they starting up conversations on FB about the Devils with the word “We” to describe the team? Wherever they are, its a shame they aren’t at the building most nights. They also have a great coach. They are prepared, disciplined and seem to play over their heads (see: last years playoffs.) The also have a coach who isn’t afraid to mix it up with other “bombastic” coaches on the Atlantic Division. And while Pete DeBoer is all those things, and Adam Graves buddy as well. I can’t help but think “S******’s full” every time he pops up on the telly.
The Rangers (who sell out every home game) need a win tonight to get over .500 and start their climb to play the level of hockey expected this season. They are making some positive steps. The second line actually scored a couple of goals last time out and with the exception of the Pittsburgh game, the D has been playing much better. The power play is still a garbage (3-30) 10% and must start producing or the NYR will have a tough time making the playoffs let alone competing for a Cup this year.
Henrik Lundqvist is back in net tonight and JT Miller makes his NYR debut. This kid is big, he can skate and he is real tough on draws. He should help the NYR in the circles. Speaking of big kids who can skate, Chris Kreider should be back tonight as well. It will be great to see a large number of home grown Rangers and draft picks in the lineup tonight. Miller (1st Round/15th overall), Kreider (1st/19th), Del Zotto (1st/20th), and Staal (1st/12th) give the NYR four home-grown first rounders suiting up. When was the last time that happened?
Darroll Powe will also play and block some shots, but Ryan Callahan remains out.
The Rangers need to attack Martin Brodeur tonight. WE need traffic and confusion in front of Marty, if WE can find some sort of power play, WE should be successful at the Rock. If WE play a perimeter, low-energy game and take a bunch of penalties, WE’ll get smoked. (Annoying isn’t it?)
